Iceskating

Hess Iceskating Rink in New Castle has been worth several visits and the 40 minute drive, although I wish they would acquire more cones/crates or "walkers" to hang on to for those learning how to skate. Although I've never been, they stay open in the summer, and offer hockey and figure skating lessons. Indoor Swimming in Slippery Rock

The Slippery Rock University Aebersold Recreation Center (ARC) offers a great indoor pool and rock climbing wall. Children under 9 get in free with an adult who is a member. For info check out http://administration.sru.edu/arc/crws/index.htm

Walk Along Wolf Creek

Wolf Creek offers a lovely trail, full of wild flowers in the spring. We've also discovered the moss that gives Slippery Rock its name! You'll find the trailhead by following North Main Street and turning left on Water Street, following Water Street approximately 1.5 miles until you see an iron grated bridge with barn on the left. Parking immediately follows on the left. We recommend that you walk on foot back over the bridge, and turn left and pick up the trailhead heading north along the creek. I could not find a link to this portion of the trail on northcountrytrail.org, so if anyone has a link to this trail, please post.

Slippery Rock Parks and Rec

The Slippery Rock Parks and Rec has a cute playground that is rarely crowded. It is located on North Main Street in Slippery Rock. Close by is the relatively new town library. Parks and Rec offers a great summer swim program for infants through teens. In two week sessions, the instructors offer a Red Cross swim curriculum, and take time to stress water safety. Outdoor Swimming in Slippery Rock

For hot summer days, try an outing at the local Armco Park where the Butler YMCA operates a small but lovely pool, equipped with a concession stand and nearby playground. Summer 2008 prices were very reasonable at $3 for adults and $2.50 for children.
